How Does Media Affect Us?

This past year in Mr. Starace's Critical Thinking Class we have watched three films: The Persuaders, Merchants of Cool and Missrepresentation. These films clearly portrayed the same thing: media's effect on everyone. In the documentary Missrepresentation, we were shown how media breaks through the barriers we have put up in order to try to block out most of the media we have today. They use violence and over sexualize nearly everything we watch in order to get us to absorb what were watching. This past weekend I was watching the trailer for the movie Deadpool 2. While the movie may have been incredibly explicit and rated R for a multitude of reasons, I noticed some things in the movie that I can relate to this movie. In the one scene of her shown in the trailer she was seen sitting at home as a housewife waiting for Deadpool to get home. She is seen as this impatient, annoying housewife who is not doing anything. This is harmful to women as it portrays a false image of what wom...

3 Billboards in Ebbing Missouri

This weekend my mom and I went to the movie theaters to see a movie called 3 Billboards in Ebbing Missouri.  Mildred Hayes, a hard-nosed mother is seeking justice for her murdered daughter. With no arrests after seven months, Mildred puts up three roadside signs to goad Ebbing police chief into action. But the law - and especially Sam Rockwell's hot-headed deputy - don't take kindly to the provocation. And  the townsfolk are on their side. But Mildred doesn't care about ruffling a few feathers. In fact, she's happy to pluck the whole bird. The movie contained several controversial topics such as: racism, homophobia and violence. They seemed to be making a point about the lack of action to serve justice to those who need it. I am not as aware of the climate between the police and the African American community due to the fact that I am white. This movie made me realize that everyone's life is affected by this relationship. This movie wasn't just a piece of fictio...

The Royal Wedding

This weekend, an event occurred that was actually a positive thing for once.  watched the royal wedding. This surprisingly turned out to be an interesting event. I noticed many unusual things about the ceremony. One of the first things I noticed was that she walked herself halfway to the beama before the father of Prince Harry walked her the rest of the way. This was very interesting as it seemed a combination of multiple traditions. Her father didnt walkk her as he had some heart conditions.

GMO Labels? Finally?

This weekend I was browsing a few news sites I go such as The New York Times, NBC, The Vice and a few others when I came across the same topic a few times. The news story had shown up enough times that it peaked my interest. I had heard the term GMO before and knew it meant genetically modified organisms. I vaguely remembered reading an article in 4th grade about GMO's and how they are bad for us. However, I didn't remember much about GMO's so I decided to read the article and educate myself on the topic. I had never realized how much GMO's are in the food I eat until I read the article. I wanted to know why they were requiring them to be labelled. The term GMO's usually refers to plants and animals created by altering genes with laboratory techniques in ways that conventional forms of breeding can’t, often by inserting genetic material from one species into another . According to the article, " The United States Department of Agriculture has   proposed new gui...

SNL: Mother's Day Special

This Saturday I sat down to watch Saturday Night Live. I hadn't watched the show in almost over a year. In fact the last time I recall watching the show was right after the election last year. In the opening segment they opened up with a bit that focused on certain actors and their mothers. Each parent and their child were given 10-20 seconds to say a sentence or two too each other about their daughter or son's contribution to the show or what their opinions on the show were.  As  Aidy Bryant explained at the outset, “Normally we open the show with a political sketch which can sometimes be divisive. But since tomorrow is Mother’s Day, we’re going to focus on the one thing we can all celebrate together: moms.” I found this very interesting as I have heard from several of my friends only talk about the skits that had something to do with Trump. I had the realization that I couldn't think of one skit that didn't have something to do with Trump since before he was elected....

Are You A Leader?

This weekend I watched an unusual amount of television. This was due to the fact that one of my favorite soccer teams, Barcelona was playing against their rival team, Real Madrid. Therefore, I saw many advertisements during the 15 minute half time show. One of my favorite ones that I saw was a Budweiser commercial. One concept I recently learned about was high concept ads. A high concept ad is an ad that is supposed to get you to act emotionally and makes you want to attempt to be a leader of some sort.  This Budweiser ad showed a man waking up next to his wife early in the morning getting ready to work. When he got on the highway, no one was on it. This showed exactly how much of a hard worker he was and evoked some sort of emotion in me. I wanted to work hard for my family, I wanted to wake up early just like he did. This commercial made me feel a sense of responsibility I've never felt before.

HGTV: Flipping Houses

HGTV is often watched by my parents on the weekend when they are not bogged down by any work they might have. They turn on the tv and switch to channel 746. Usually no matter what they always find it entertaining. They have been doing this years. After all this time I decided to ask myself a simple qu estion: Why do they like this show so much? The answer came to me as quickly as the question did. In other words, your renovations might take weeks or months  while Chip and Joanna's Gaines home makeover requires less than an hour of your time. And in the end it looks  perfect , unlike what  you  may have experienced. This especially seems relevant to my life due to how much my parents have renovated our houses over the years. 6 months can seem like one hour, which only goes to show that to humanity time is one of the most valuable resources.
