GMO Labels? Finally?

This weekend I was browsing a few news sites I go such as The New York Times, NBC, The Vice and a few others when I came across the same topic a few times. The news story had shown up enough times that it peaked my interest. I had heard the term GMO before and knew it meant genetically modified organisms. I vaguely remembered reading an article in 4th grade about GMO's and how they are bad for us. However, I didn't remember much about GMO's so I decided to read the article and educate myself on the topic. I had never realized how much GMO's are in the food I eat until I read the article. I wanted to know why they were requiring them to be labelled. The term GMO's usually refers to plants and animals created by altering genes with laboratory techniques in ways that conventional forms of breeding can’t, often by inserting genetic material from one species into another. According to the article, "The United States Department of Agriculture has proposed new guidelines for labeling foods that contain genetically modified ingredients. Food makers would be required by federal law to use the labels, starting in 2020." I can understand how people would want to know what is put in their food however, if there are no known harmful causes of GMO's what could be wrong with them? In my opinion as long as the GMO's are being regulated by some other group or person than the growers that is knowledgable in this field I am fine with GMO's being in my food.
