Blog #2 Peace between North and South Korea?

 April 29th, 2018

On Friday a historical event occurred. North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un became the first North Korean head of state to step foot on South Korean soil. What this talk means for the future of all parties involved remains speculation. Especially considering other countries stakes in this with possible causes of a nuclear war.  All we can do is wait. In both articles I examined there were a few slight differences in language I noticed.

The article I analyzed was the following: http://thehill.com/opinion/international/385259-finally-peace-on-the-korean-peninsula-not-so-fast

When these articles gave a summation of the meeting between these two leaders, they used different language. In the article from Vox in the conclusion of the argument it was stated" There are very few specifics on how to do each of those things."while The Hill described the ending as "the harmonious conclusion of their meeting." Vox seemed to want to paint a picture of cloudy uncertainty while talking about some negative aspects that the talk didn't seem to address at all such as denuclearization, the end of the Korean War as well as how North Korea will curb its nuclear problem.

The 2nd article I analyzed was the following: .https://www.vox.com/2018/4/27/17290344/north-korea-south-korea-kim-jong-un-moon-trump

The article from The Hill on the other hand seemed to also portray a reality of uncertainty for the future of these countries. However, it seemed to be not as pessimistic as Vox. Although they focused on certain problems that these talks didn't discuss, they discussed "improved inter-Korean relations; a solid building block for the upcoming Trump-Kim summit; and the road to North Korea’s complete denuclearization and rehabilitated behavior." They seemed to give a more neutral perspective on the issue at hand.

How Does Media Affect Us?

This past year in Mr. Starace's Critical Thinking Class we have watched three films: The Persuaders, Merchants of Cool and Missrepresentation. These films clearly portrayed the same thing: media's effect on everyone. In the documentary Missrepresentation, we were shown how media breaks through the barriers we have put up in order to try to block out most of the media we have today. They use violence and over sexualize nearly everything we watch in order to get us to absorb what were watching. This past weekend I was watching the trailer for the movie Deadpool 2. While the movie may have been incredibly explicit and rated R for a multitude of reasons, I noticed some things in the movie that I can relate to this movie. In the one scene of her shown in the trailer she was seen sitting at home as a housewife waiting for Deadpool to get home. She is seen as this impatient, annoying housewife who is not doing anything. This is harmful to women as it portrays a false image of what wom...

HGTV: Flipping Houses

HGTV is often watched by my parents on the weekend when they are not bogged down by any work they might have. They turn on the tv and switch to channel 746. Usually no matter what they always find it entertaining. They have been doing this years. After all this time I decided to ask myself a simple qu estion: Why do they like this show so much? The answer came to me as quickly as the question did. In other words, your renovations might take weeks or months  while Chip and Joanna's Gaines home makeover requires less than an hour of your time. And in the end it looks  perfect , unlike what  you  may have experienced. This especially seems relevant to my life due to how much my parents have renovated our houses over the years. 6 months can seem like one hour, which only goes to show that to humanity time is one of the most valuable resources.

Blog Post: Rapture

Rapture has become one of my favorite TV shows of all time on Netflix, technically in general due to how little I watch TV. The description of the show according to Netflix is: " In their own words, hip-hop stars describe what defines them as artists and the effect they've had on culture beyond music." Each episode provided unique insight into how each artist's life was different, their inspiration, where they came from and how that influenced their life. This gave me insight specifically into the fight against racism. Many rappers lives were affected by their upbringing in a time where tensions were high, in some events such as the Los Angeles riots as well as many shootings. I was always aware that music and slavery and the fight against of racism were so interconnected. My perspective has changed. Music is not just an instrument to make people want to dance, it has been and will continue to be used to spread messages to millions of people all around the world. Perh...
