Blog Post: Rapture

Rapture has become one of my favorite TV shows of all time on Netflix, technically in general due to how little I watch TV. The description of the show according to Netflix is: "In their own words, hip-hop stars describe what defines them as artists and the effect they've had on culture beyond music." Each episode provided unique insight into how each artist's life was different, their inspiration, where they came from and how that influenced their life. This gave me insight specifically into the fight against racism. Many rappers lives were affected by their upbringing in a time where tensions were high, in some events such as the Los Angeles riots as well as many shootings. I was always aware that music and slavery and the fight against of racism were so interconnected. My perspective has changed. Music is not just an instrument to make people want to dance, it has been and will continue to be used to spread messages to millions of people all around the world. Perhaps our culture has found a new way to communicate with each other, we just haven't had the realization or are too ignorant to see it.

    This is one of my favorite shows. Although I never have time to watch it I always try to fit it into my schedule. For me it really is crazy how some of my favorite rappers or artists grew up. It really helps me understand their lines or music in general. Has it made you view it differently at all?

How Does Media Affect Us?

This past year in Mr. Starace's Critical Thinking Class we have watched three films: The Persuaders, Merchants of Cool and Missrepresentation. These films clearly portrayed the same thing: media's effect on everyone. In the documentary Missrepresentation, we were shown how media breaks through the barriers we have put up in order to try to block out most of the media we have today. They use violence and over sexualize nearly everything we watch in order to get us to absorb what were watching. This past weekend I was watching the trailer for the movie Deadpool 2. While the movie may have been incredibly explicit and rated R for a multitude of reasons, I noticed some things in the movie that I can relate to this movie. Blog #1-Inception January 29th

This Thursday I decided to watch a TV and a movie I had heard about a lot had come on. Luckily the movie had just started so I was able to understand the premise and background of it. While some of the movie was confusing I was mostly able to make some sense of it. The interesting idea surrounding the title was the definition of the word Inception- implanting an idea so deeply into someone's mind that they believe they thought of it themselves and do it. There's a lot of action and violence in the film. This might have been purposefully confusing. I think the filmmaker wanted to bring up point. What some of us may think is normal isn't according to others. How do we justify what is and isn't normal? When our systems of justice fail that we live by how do we decide what is right or wrong? This film brought up an interesting point about the nature of humanity that I've always questioned.

Blog #2 Peace between North and South Korea?

 April 29th, 2018          On Friday a historical event occurred. North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un became the first North Korean head of state to step foot on South Korean soil. What this talk means for the future of all parties involved remains speculation. Especially considering other countries stakes in this with possible causes of a nuclear war.  All we can do is wait. In both articles I examined there were a few slight differences in language I noticed.
