Blog Reflection Post

My interactions with media began later in my life compared to most of my peers, or rather not as much as them. Due to my family living on a farm, we couldn't afford to pay for a t.v. as we had to spend so much of our time taking care of our animals. Therefore, we had one home phone and one computer for everyone. Because of this I would only see a screen twice a week and only played video games on the computer. However, when I ended up moving several times over the next few years my interaction with media became much more complicated. I went from consuming around 30 minutes to an hour of media to now consuming around 4- 5 hours a day. My life has drastically changed because of this. I would almost say I have an addiction as when I am without my phone I'm always grabbing my pocket and get bored extremely easily. This has also applied to my reading. When I am reading a newspaper, article, a book or even an article online I find myself forgetting what I am reading about if I...

A Tweet Cancels a Show?

Recently in the news a tweet by a famous tv-show actor in a popular show called Roseanne was cancelled. Her tw eet  Barr tweeted the initials ‘vj’ and the words: ‘Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby’. This quote was directed at former advisor for President Obama Valerie Jarret. As one might expect, this gained traction extremely fast and a show that had been running for 20 years was cancelled after a tweet that probably took less than 30 minutes to write up. This made me think about how much media can affect our lives negatively. We have all made mistakes on the internet, maybe not as horrible as Roseanne but coming close. How accountable for our actions are we for our social media? According to Roseanne we should always watch what we post on the internet because we never know how it could affect us one day.

Kim Kardahshian Meets Trump?

This week in the news I saw something I never once thought I would see, at least not where and at the time. Kim Kardashian meeting with Donald Trump in the White House? While it may sound crazy, it is true. So, what was she there to talk about with Donald Trump? After all, it's not every day a celebrity widely known for her sex-tape get's to meet the president. According to several news outlets she was there    to grant clemency to Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old great-grandmother who is serving a life sentence in a federal pen for a first-time, nonviolent drug offense. While this may seem important, it isn't hard to imagine there are several other cases like this. Why has Mrs. Kardashian been allowed to have a meeting with our president about this? Shouldn't he be focusing on other important issues right now? Who knows? I'm not the president.

How Does Media Affect Us?

This past year in Mr. Starace's Critical Thinking Class we have watched three films: The Persuaders, Merchants of Cool and Missrepresentation. These films clearly portrayed the same thing: media's effect on everyone. In the documentary Missrepresentation, we were shown how media breaks through the barriers we have put up in order to try to block out most of the media we have today. They use violence and over sexualize nearly everything we watch in order to get us to absorb what were watching. This past weekend I was watching the trailer for the movie Deadpool 2. While the movie may have been incredibly explicit and rated R for a multitude of reasons, I noticed some things in the movie that I can relate to this movie. In the one scene of her shown in the trailer she was seen sitting at home as a housewife waiting for Deadpool to get home. She is seen as this impatient, annoying housewife who is not doing anything. This is harmful to women as it portrays a false image of what wom...

3 Billboards in Ebbing Missouri

This weekend my mom and I went to the movie theaters to see a movie called 3 Billboards in Ebbing Missouri.  Mildred Hayes, a hard-nosed mother is seeking justice for her murdered daughter. With no arrests after seven months, Mildred puts up three roadside signs to goad Ebbing police chief into action. But the law - and especially Sam Rockwell's hot-headed deputy - don't take kindly to the provocation. And  the townsfolk are on their side. But Mildred doesn't care about ruffling a few feathers. In fact, she's happy to pluck the whole bird. The movie contained several controversial topics such as: racism, homophobia and violence. They seemed to be making a point about the lack of action to serve justice to those who need it. I am not as aware of the climate between the police and the African American community due to the fact that I am white. This movie made me realize that everyone's life is affected by this relationship. This movie wasn't just a piece of fictio...

The Royal Wedding

This weekend, an event occurred that was actually a positive thing for once.  watched the royal wedding. This surprisingly turned out to be an interesting event. I noticed many unusual things about the ceremony. One of the first things I noticed was that she walked herself halfway to the beama before the father of Prince Harry walked her the rest of the way. This was very interesting as it seemed a combination of multiple traditions. Her father didnt walkk her as he had some heart conditions.

GMO Labels? Finally?

This weekend I was browsing a few news sites I go such as The New York Times, NBC, The Vice and a few others when I came across the same topic a few times. The news story had shown up enough times that it peaked my interest. I had heard the term GMO before and knew it meant genetically modified organisms. I vaguely remembered reading an article in 4th grade about GMO's and how they are bad for us. However, I didn't remember much about GMO's so I decided to read the article and educate myself on the topic. I had never realized how much GMO's are in the food I eat until I read the article. I wanted to know why they were requiring them to be labelled. The term GMO's usually refers to plants and animals created by altering genes with laboratory techniques in ways that conventional forms of breeding can’t, often by inserting genetic material from one species into another . According to the article, " The United States Department of Agriculture has   proposed new gui...
